Art and Genetics Exhibition - July 2017.

Art and Genetics opened at the Otago Museum in Dunedin on Tuesday 4th July. Artists from throughout Otago and Central Otago were paired with genetic scientists from the University of Otago to collaborate on an exhibition representing the scientists research topic through the eyes of the artist. The result was a very diverse show of 3D and 2D work.

Annemarie Hope Cross paired with a genetic scientist researching colon cancer. Using historic photography processes, and linking that with music script, she created a large work entitled 'Hope'.

Eric Schusser worked with an Italian scientist studying genetics and Kaka conservation in New Zealand. Eric's intention was to create a social/ personal documentary piece combining quotes from the scientist, images of lab work, and photos taken of Kaka at Orokonui.

Peter Stupples - lecturer at Otago Polytechnic curated the exhibition which was run in association with the Conference of the Genetics Society of Australasia hosted at the University of Otago. He said, "The idea is not to illustrate science but to mainly to bring science to the public, to show people who come to the show an idea of science." 24 artists participated in this show which will run until 16th July in the HD Skinner Annex, Otago Museum, Dunedin.
