Martin Hill and his partner and collaborator Philippa Jones are recipients of the 2012 inaugural programme of the Kenneth Myer Artist’s / Writer’s Alpine Retreat . They have completed the first part of the residency in which they will spend a total of 20 days working from Whare Kea Chalet at 1681 metres on the Albert Burn Saddle, opposite Mt Aspiring.

They have developed a project titled Watershed that will comprise a new body of work specifically looking at the water cycle, the ecological life it supports and its importance to a sustainable future. The location of the chalet is the watershed between two streams that feed into two river systems, the Matukituki and the Albert Burn.

The project examines the relationships between human systems and the water cycle that supports them. Works will also be made while following the descent of these significant river systems which both flow into Lake Wanaka. Concepts in development include ephemeral environmental sculptures, works on paper, photographic works, permanent sculptures and video, and the project is to be exhibited in New Zealand and Australia
