BEETHOVEN 250

The Central Otago Regional Orchestra is having a concert series on November 28th and 29th in Alexandra and Wanaka respectively. It is the 250th anniversary of Beethoven's Birthday. All over the world, various orchestras and other musical groups have planned concerts to celebrate this occasion. There were "Beethoven Bashes" being planned for August in both Christchurch and Dunedin where all comers were being made welcome to join playing some of his most well known music. Here in Central Otago, New Zealand, the musicians of CORO are privileged to be able to continue with the celebratory concert planning for which began last November. This was when we had the pleasure and excitement of performing Greig's piano concerto with Patrick Cornfield. He will be back again to perform Beethoven's "Emperor Piano Concerto". This is bound to delight the audience and orchestra members along with the other pieces in the concert, Symphony No 8, and the aptly named “Name-Day Overture”.

Ludwig van Beethoven (17 December 1770 – 26 March 1827) was a German composer and pianist whose music ranks amongst the most performed of the classical music repertoire; he remains one of the most admired composers in the history of Western music. From 1801 his hearing began to deteriorate, he continued to conduct, premiering his Third and Fifth Symphonies in 1804 and 1808, He was almost completely deaf by 1814, and he then gave up performing and appearing in public. In the years from 1810, increasingly less socially involved, Beethoven composed many of his most admired works including his later symphonies, his Missa Solemnis in the years 1819–1823, and his final, Ninth, Symphony, one of the first examples of a choral symphony, in 1822–1824. Beethoven's works remain mainstays of the classical music repertoire. Come along and enjoy this beautiful music, bring a friend. The players themselves are enjoying practising - the more it is played the g r e a t e r t h e a p p r e c i a t i o n a n d enjoyment.
