Contemporary Art and Traditional Crafts from Vanuatu

Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery presents WELKAM LONG VANUATU, a special exhibition curated by Katherine Buess that celebrates the rich artistic traditions of Vanuatu. The show features contemporary works by Ni‑Vanuatu artists Tony Bruce, Juliette Pita and Kiki Kuautonga, traditional crafts from across the islands, and Buess’s own portraits of Ni‑Vanuatu women.

Highlighting the diverse cultures of Melanesia, the exhibition reveals how Pacific artists honour ancestral practices while exploring new creative directions. Intricate weavings, carvings and bold modern artworks showcase the depth of Vanuatu’s cultural heritage.

Curator Katherine Buess—an award‑winning Invercargill artist and Otago Polytechnic graduate—has extensive experience working in Pacific communities. Through her roles with Volunteer Services Abroad, she has led art programmes, community projects and artist mentoring in Vanuatu and Timor‑Leste. Her strong relationships with Ni‑Vanuatu artists bring authenticity and insight to the exhibition. Buess’s own practice spans printmaking, mixed media and paper sculpture, with national and international recognition.
