Central Stories is delighted to welcome Roger Lusby for an evening that is part memoir, part performance, and entirely unforgettable.

Roger Lusby spent the year 1969–70 wintering over at Scott Base, Antarctica, as a base mechanic as part of Operation Deep Freeze. It was a year of extraordinary isolation, brutal conditions, and rare beauty, an experience that has stayed with him ever since.

Born near the Old Man Range in Central Otago, Roger Lusby has gone on to become an award-winning New Zealand songwriter, rural balladeer, bush poet, and folk singer and over the past three years he has woven those talents into a deeply personal audio-visual show about his time on the ice.

Featuring photographs, stories, original songs, poems and plenty of humour, 40 Years Below is Roger's way of sharing one of life's most remarkable chapters with the people and places he calls home.

The evening also includes a tribute to Sir Ernest Shackleton and the dramatic loss of his ship Endurance in 1914.

Those who have seen the show elsewhere around New Zealand have described it as "enthralling," "inspiring," and "superb" with one audience member saying they felt as though they had actually been to Antarctica themselves.

This is a rare chance to hear a local story told by a local legend.

Roger grew up in Roxburgh and the landscapes of Central Otago shaped him making this homecoming performance all the more special.
