Hullabaloo Art Space - 'Curiously Curated' by Debbie Neil
Location: Hullabaloo Art Space
Region: Cromwell
Dates: Sun, 23 April 2023 - Sat, 20 May 2023 @ 10am - 4pm Daily
A collection of works continuing the exploration of curiosities from the Victorian era. Along with new Wire Life Drawing sculpture works, are studies of nests, eggs, living and dead birds, and flowers.
Debbie is a multimedia artist who works with recycled materials. Birds are commonly regarded as a symbol of freedom and environmental indicators. Dead birds on the other hand are regarded as a reminder of our own mortality as memento mori, and bring to mind decay, the perils of endangerment and the fragile nature of the environment we have an impact on. Nests can be regarded as symbols of creating a warm, safe home and parenthood. Flowers are indicators of the scientific world, beauty and femininity, they were used widely in Victorian times as symbols of these attributes and specifically within the confines of the garden they signify a safe enclave to allow for personal reflection. Rusted wire line drawings highlight the sensual and impermanent nature of the figure, along with the flowers, birds and nests. A sense of peace, freshness of life and the delicate balance of life and death is created, questioning how we view these forms.
These works bring together a lifetime love of science, natural history, curiosity collections, the Victorian Era and life drawing studies. It touches on the issues of entanglement, mortality, environmentalism initially influenced from revolutionary breakthroughs in arts and sciences in Victorian times that are still evident within the current Anthropocene environment. I have always had a fascination for the Victorian age, in terms of houses, designs, way of life. This fascination has been part of the drive to learn about and research this Era and has an influence in the resolution of my art pieces. It is the entanglement relationships between nature and ourselves that needs to be carefully considered, every action by humankind has a reaction or consequence.
