Dates: Sun, 2 May 2021 - Sun, 30 May 2021 @ Daily.
Eade Gallery is proud to present the first of our Emerging Artist Solo Exhibitions. A solo exhibition can be a daunting process for established artists let alone an artist who has not shown their work before. We work alongside the artist months out from their solo, mentoring them through the stages of preparing for their exhibition. Thomas Geddes has been chosen as our first emerging artist for his refreshing and unique approach to the use of watercolour, the reasoning behind its use and the surreal quality of his inherently New Zealand “landscapes”. He recently graduated from Whitecliffe College of Art and Design in Auckland. Thomas Geddes will often change mediums to better suit the work he is making. In recent years, alongside watercolour, he has delved into moving image, sculptural and installation projects. Different media allow different ways of approaching questions around the animate nature of the world, the ways we interact with our environments, and the seemingly arbitrary distinctions we draw between nature and humanity, self and other.
ARTIST STATEMENT A love of nature and the wildness of the world is at the heart of this body of watercolour paintings. While some of the landscapes are what might be called 'real places', many are dreamier inbetween places, drawing inspiration from wild Otago and the wider realm of Aotearoa landscapes. Even the idea of a 'real place' is questionable, as we all meet each place uniquely. Watercolour has been chosen for its animate qualities, the way it seems to take on its own life, creating beautiful and surprising effects. These unexpected moments help to create an indistinct and liminal quality. “The slightly surreal quality of these inherently New Zealand landscapes I am painting, and the occasional inclusion of small, ambiguous bird headed figures, shows the influence of Bill Hammond in my work.”
