Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery - Broken Fences, Weatherboard Dreams, by Jane Coombs
Location: Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery
Region: Alexandra
Dates: Thu, 6 October 2022 - Thu, 3 November 2022 @ 10am - 4pm Daily
Jane is primarily a landscape painter, working in the mediums of oil and acrylic ink. Her creative approach is both representational and stylistic.
She have always enjoyed the freedom of the outdoors and the solitude of the countryside. She has hiked, biked and kayaked in some spectacular locations but she needs to feel a true connection with a place before she feels ready to paint it. The mountains of the South Island of New Zealand and the national parks of Wales have been such places for her.
She sees a special beauty in a landscape which can, against all the odds, retain a wild element. she seeks to reflect what she considers to be the infinity and resilience of nature in her oil paintings, despite our lasting impact on that environment.
Her time spent in London saw her art moving in a different direction as she sought to interpret the austerity and loneliness of the city. She spent days commuting to work and weekends visiting street markets. She painted what she saw out of the train window every day and graffiti became a recurring theme in her urban landscapes. She began to experiment with character drawings of the people she observed in the street markets of London and, once again, she found black acrylic ink to be a perfect medium for this series of work.
Since returning to New Zealand she has taken her time to reconnect with the country, all that she loves about it and what it means to her. Once again she has turned to acrylic ink and oil as mediums of choice. She has just completed her latest series of New Zealand landscapes, which she have entitled "Broken Fences, Weatherboard Dreams". These works will feature in her solo exhibition at Central Stories Museum and Gallery in Alexandra from October 6 to November 3, 2022.
