Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery - "A Garden is a Long Time".
Location: Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery
Region: Alexandra
Dates: Fri, 15 December 2023 - Wed, 31 January 2024 @ 10am - 4pm Daily
A GARDEN IS A LONG TIME surveys the combined work of two photographers, their imagery and series of work that were inspired during a period of acute illness.
This exhibition represents a survey of their respective work from the period circa 2017 - 2023. The images combine as a unique collaboration that is both photographic art but photographic art that brought hope and a response to a cancer diagnosis.
Annemarie Hope-Cross is an internationally exhibiting historic processes artist with collections in the Fox Talbot Museum, Wiltshire, England and the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, as well as private collections. Her exacting labour to mix chemicals and produce images in the manner of one of the founders of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot, led her to explore many historic photographic processes in a short period of time. Haunting ephemeral images using the photogenic drawing process, as well as wet plate collodion, cyanotypes and anthotypes were her specialty. Annemarie died in December 2023 after living with cancer for five and a half years
Eric Schusser is an award winning photographic artist whose focus includes black and white landscape photography, abstract photography and the telling of stories through the combination of images and text. His work over this period is a response to the change in life’s direction and the places visited while travelling for treatment.
Stylistically, the early history of photography is connected with its modern digital counterpart, juxtaposing
the serenity of photogenic drawings with the edgier, urban feel of digital processes. This allows the images to interlock rather than contrast - two voices telling a shared story of individual lives intertwined on the same path. Light in the darkness.
