Central Otago Regional Orchestra - Winter Concert in Alexandra
Location: Alexandra Community Centre
Region: Alexandra
Dates: Sat, 28 May 2016 @ 7.30pm
The theme Is that of “A Bowl of Potpourri". As well as a selection of orchestral pieces there will be some small group items by members. In addition there will be an item by the Training orchestra.
Music – it soothes, it celebrates, it dances and at times is expresses the mood of a nation in trouble.
The music that the Central Otago Regional Orchestra is to present at its next concert series does all of that. The music created in support of the executed Count of Egmont who opposed the Napoleonic Wars in Beethoven's Egmont Overture along with the music of Marche Slave composed by Tchaikovsky in support of the Serbo-Turkish (1870's) War are works expressing the political situation of those times.
It contrasts markedly with Bizet's Jeux Enfants - Petit Suite from a collection of 12 works by Bizet. The top, the doll, the ball and the duo between the little husband and the little wife (petit mari, petite femme express joyfulness, pensiveness and the excitement of the gallop in Le Bal (a well known number that the audience are all likely to recognise). The orchestra's members (consisting of more than 30 players from all over Central Otago including Roxburgh Alexandra, Cromwell Wanaka, Queenstown and our viola player Robyn Mutch from Dunback) are particularly enjoying the quirkiness of some of this music under the baton of Aart Brusse. Aart, who is well known in Otago music circles, travels from Dunedin on a regular basis to lead the orchestra in rehearsal.
Another favourite listeners are certain to recognise is the ballet music from Rosamunde by Schubert (Number 1 and 2), This was written as part of the incidental music for a play by Helmina von Chezy and it is the music that supported the play that remains well known rather than the play itself. The second part of this piece is particularly bright and sure to get the feet tapping.
Cut to the twentieth century and the orchestra swings to the excitement of “ Bond.........James Bond”
