THE MCCAHON HOUSE RESIDENCY

McCahon House Artist Residencies are designed to support artists at pivotal points in their careers by providing the time, space and support to focus on the development of their practice.

Their approach to residencies has expanded to encompass residencies for mid-career artists based in New Zealand Aotearoa, along with residencies that have been developed to have a specific focus, in partnership with organisations both here and abroad. See their International Residencies page for more information.

Residencies offered in Aotearoa are situated at Parehuia – a purpose-built dwelling and studio in French Bay, Titirangi. The site was gifted the name Parehuia by local kaumatua Eru Thompson in 2008. See their Parehuia Residency pages for more information.

EARTHSKIN CREATIVE RESIDENCY

Earthskin supports a network of local and international artists, through developing local havens that provide creatives with a place to create and exhibit their work. Residencies and workshops give artists a grounding space to diversify their mediums and immerse themselves fully. The artists are being nourished, internally and externally, by being fed by, and living in a closer and genuine relationship with the whenua (land), and in balance with themselves. Furthermore, immersion in permaculture ethics awakens greater environmental consciousness, creating awareness around ethical and eco-minded art practice.

VISITING ARTIST PROGRAMME

The newly established Visiting Artist Programme of Te Whare Toi o Heretaunga Hastings Art Gallery (HAG) offers an annual 8-week residency for Aotearoa artists towards developing a solo exhibition project. The programme is designed to foster new connections within the Te Matau-a-M?ui Hawke’s Bay region and support the development of unique bodies of work.

The inaugural visiting artist for 2024 was Heidi Brickell. Recognising the need for more open opportunities for established Aotearoa artists, HAG is calling for proposals for a residency beginning August 2025, with a subsequent exhibition in February 2026.

The Gallery is seeking projects that will present an opportunity for an artist to make new work that cannot be developed elsewhere. Accommodation and a workspace in Heretaunga Hastings are included, as well as a stipend, research and materials budget, and other forms of support.

Artists must be citizens or legal permanent residents of Aotearoa New Zealand, based outside of Te Matau-a-M?ui Hawke’s Bay and demonstrate at least eight years of public exhibition practice. They must be able to reside and work full-time in Heretaunga Hastings during the term of the residency.
