'In the Neighbourhood' - an exhibition of works by Gail de Jong at Hullabaloo Art Space.
Inland Otago, Bannockburn and the Nevis Valley, distinctive in their geographic reality, are potent symbols and source for this artist, confirming the ethos of place in the New Zealand psyche. Constant exposure to this land allows for continuous reappraisal of familiar terrains. The artist has developed a complex way of making these paintings. Her interpretations swing between a deeply felt interior world enriched by poetry, memory and myth, and the potent geography of her external world. In these works there is visible evidence of immense processes in the landscape, perceived through an intensely layered conceptual approach. The artist and the viewer engage in transverse and recessive spacial sequences, allowing for formal pictorial shifts to occur within the work.
'My paintings are about extensive spaces felt rather than seen. This multi centred experience corresponds to the notion of variable meanings and readings – adding and subtracting layers or excavations, shifting space, adding and subtracting imagery, paint, colour, marks, surface, tactility – perceived reality – its how I like to make paintings.'
Gail de Jong is a professional Painter based in Bannockburn, Central Otago. In 2017 she won the ' Arts Gold, Nock Foundation Outstanding Central Otago Artist Award '
