An exhibition of works by Rae West and Rachael Errington.
Rachael Errington is an award-winning full time artist and illustrator. She’s worked with Artbay Gallery for almost a decade, selling her serene woodland paintings to hotels and private collectors nationally and internationally. Originally from Liverpool, UK, Rachael lived in Queenstown for nine years, taking inspiration from the stunning scenery and in particular the ever-changing trees which surround her favourite walking tracks. Rachael now works from her new studio in Taupo, on the North Island of New Zealand. Her timeless depictions of seasons and nature are created using oils and acrylics, using a special layering technique which she has developed over the last ten years. The results are distinctive, textural, and often described as ethereal and reflective of an ‘enchanted forest’.
Rae Wests story starts with her slightly eccentric grandmother, whose house was soaked in the smell of oil paints. Rae would sit back in awe, contemplating her grandmothers arthritic hands as they brought porcelain and blank canvas to life. Moving on to become a graphic designer based in Sydney, Rae eventually returned to New Zealand. She followed in the footsteps of grandma, with pottery and canvas paintings for various clients. Then after a little mentoring, she was soon showcasing her work at a number of galleries. Her new works pulse with the kinetic freedom of fluidity and light. She uses multiple veils of pigment, resin and ink, which blend and react against each other creating beautiful forms and textures. The end result is spontaneous, subconscious and sensual.
