Often referred to as “The First Lady of Song”, Ella Fitzgerald was the most popular female jazz singer in the United States for more than half a century, earning 13 Grammy awards and selling over 40 million albums. Her voice was flexible, wide-ranging, accurate and ageless, with a pure tone and incredible improvisation ability. Joe Pass was an American jazz guitarist, esteemed as one of the most notable jazz guitarists of the 20th century.

The collaboration between Ella and Joe is considered one of the most iconic partnerships in jazz history. The pair first appeared together in 1973 at Carnegie Hall for that year’s Newport-in-New York Jazz Festival, after which they both told interviewers the musical connection was immediate. A month later they recorded their first album together, Take Love Easy, and went on to record three more studio albums towards the end of Fitzgerald’s career – Fitzgerald and Pass… Again (1976), Speak Love (1983), and Easy Living (1986). They performed around the world together between 1974 and 1986 when Fitzgerald’s declining health forced her to stop performing.
