 Death by a Thousand Cuts by Jane Mitchell

"Death by a Thousand Cuts" is a celebration of both the beauty and fragility of the landscape.  

Incorporating vintage wallpaper and textured tiles as cultural artefacts evokes nostalgia, connecting the landscape to domestic spaces. This symbolises how nature is often idealised within our personal and cultural histories. This blending suggests that landscapes are not just seen but also felt and remembered, shaped by the stories we carry with us. The interplay between landscapes and domestic objects fosters a dialogue about our collective memory and how we experience our precious land. 

This body of work contrasts large-scale, romanticised, realist landscapes with smaller abstract pieces that express emotional responses to the weight these landscapes carry. The landscapes feature distressed surfaces, drips, tiles and drilled holes, representing human influence that can be both beautiful and destructive.
