Kiya Nancarrow - New Moves.
‘New Moves' are a fresh group of pieces made using paper clay which can encourage more fluidity in the movement I love to create. The corten steel pieces are a recent venture into a new medium which is both thrilling and challenging. It has a unique but very different response to the forms I am asking for it.
Jon Thom - New Works.
'I am interested in the way that my generation buy things and then as soon as the purchase is seen to be old it is no longer valuable and is deemed to have no value and are thrown away. Flowers are a perfect example of objects we keep in our everyday lives; when they are fresh they are viewed as beautiful and desirable. However, once a flower shows signs of ageing we throw them away as if they have lost their beauty.’
In this series of work, Thom freezes the flowers in time. The flowers have been left in the artist's studio to die before being immortalised in an infinite space and time. He highlights a sense of beauty and wonder in something that is socially displayed as lifeless or worthless. In his opinion, flowers continue to hold their beauty with age and in many cases, grow in character and interest.
The use of contrasts that make up Thom’s works portray his notions of the fragilities of beauty, youth and life.
