What's happening in Central Otago
Eade Gallery - 'East meets West' by Nevillle Porter.
Location: Eade Gallery
Region: Clyde
Dates: Sun, 10 February 2019 - Wed, 6 March 2019 @ 10am - 5pm daily.
‘East meets West’ captures the diversity of Central Otago and beyond by fusing the centuries old traditional craft of Japanese washi paper with the 19th century western tradition of photography.
Neville Porter’s compositions capture fleeting moments which have been preceded by intense studies of the power and diversity of these dynamic landscapes. The burnt brown, the snow white slopes, the lush green spring growth and the colours of berries and flowers are dramatic against the sculptural landscape. The ever-changing weather creates a rolling drama with light and dazzling effects. This is a landscape that never ceases to amaze. Neville’s compositions encourage the viewer to be curious and contemplate unfamiliar scenes that evoke familiar landscapes. The opportunity to document this place often emanates from a serendipitous moment! For more than three decades Neville Porter has been fascinated by the process of creating photography. In 2018, he began exploring a new medium involving washi paper. Neville went to Japan to better understand the 1600 year old process of this papermaking. Its unique qualities provided an amazing opportunity to translate his photography in a very special way. Rembrandt and other contemporary artists greatly prized the special qualities of washi paper imported by the East India Company in the 17th century. This traditional handmade paper was registered by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage item in 2014.
Neville Porter has had a passion and interest in photography for more than three decades. As a medium it has provided an opportunity to create his own worldview and continues to evolve and take him on many incredible journeys.
