I have been working with Oamaru stone for about 5 years now having re- discovered a long held passion for the stone. While in travelling in India, in 2004 visiting a village where the main occupation is stone sculpting I fell in love with it and stayed a few weeks. Arriving back in New Zealand in 2005 I met with Christchurch sculptor Bob Rouwhorst and talked him into showing me some skills. After a few weeks of this he thought I was good enough and said “I’ll support you if you want to go further” so he supplied the stone and some tools and I started selling in his gallery. He taught me a lot over the next 6 months.
In 2008 I moved to Roxburgh to live and found a creative outlet for my work at a local fruit stall. In 2009 my partner and I were on the road in our hand crafted house truck travelling around NZ. A year on the road gave me a lot of time to reflect on what to do next. In 2010 we returned to the Teviot Valley with a new addition to our family, our son George. The sale of our beloved home on wheels allowed for an investment in my passion for stone carving!
I draw inspiration from all around me, I love to recreate natures flowing forms enhanced by sharp lines, referencing the contrasts in Central Otago’s environment. I have set up a workshop to create beautiful Oamaru stone sculptures and have them there in a garden setting for sale. I am also a tutor in this medium and I take workshops.
