The Alexandra Community Arts Council is a dedicated group of approximately ten to twelve volunteers who actively support and promote the arts within the local community.

Objectives

To recognise the arts in all forms of creative and interpretive expression. To encourage and support community participation in the arts through performances, learning opportunities, and events. To support individuals and groups engaged in artistic practice. To introduce new and innovative artistic experiences to the community.

The Council meets monthly to oversee activities aligned with these objectives. A key responsibility is administering the Central Lakes Arts Support Scheme (CLASS) for Alexandra and the Teviot Valley. This includes allocating grants of up to $2,000 to support grassroots arts programmes, workshops, exhibitions, and performances, as well as awarding an annual scholarship to assist local residents in developing their skills in an arts-related discipline.

In addition to administering CLASS funding, the Council generates its own funds through events such as the biennial Art in the Garden and hosting the Royal New Zealand Ballet, which visits Alexandra every second year. These funds are used to support individual artists and contribute to the development of local community artworks.

The Council also presents a diverse programme of performances, many selected from the Arts on Tour New Zealand annual catalogue. This enables the community to experience a wide range of high-quality performances, from classical music to contemporary theatre and comedy.

New members are always welcome, and the Council encourages anyone with an interest in supporting the arts to get involved.
