  • Bank Cafe - Vivienne Robertson

Vivienne Robertson is at heart a country person and a dedicated artist.

She is a gifted stock person and a lover of nature. Painting and drawing have evolved synonymously with her understanding and experience with animals, and her work is a reflection of her appreciation, respect and continual wonder of nature. Through her own experiences with stock work, cavalcades, managing farms and equestrian riding she has accumulated a great wealth of information about animals and healthy farm practices, refining the art of aiding their development in fundamental ways.

Originally born in Taranaki she migrated to the deep south at the age of 19, inspired by the book “ Wayleggo “ by Peter Newton and wanted to see the South Island.  She took up positions as a land girl in Outautau and West Otago and worked on stud sheep stations and high country farms. After living in numerous places since her first migration to the south in the 1970’s she now currently resides at the foot of the Rock ‘n’ Pillar range at the end of the Rail Trail in Middlemarch, with her daughter, Jo Robertson who is also a professional artist.

Culturally, Vivienne is a significant painter predominately to Middlemarch, but more importantly her work shares a commonality with the hearts of country people all around the South Island. The character’s she paints are “real people from the land “she has met along the way. Her work captures mostly the peaceful reflective moments of country life, the moments we all treasure. Similarly, landscapes and animals are painted with the same warm and compassionate touch given also to the animals she cares for.

Previously Vivienne has exhibited in numerous galleries and competitions throughout New Zealand; this is the first exhibition of her work she has had the privilege to display in Clyde.
