Abundance depicts a personal interpretation of the meaning of Kintsugi with a series of works on paper. The objects she has painted are representations of beautiful vessels once broken now renewed. Each vessel is depicting a life full of abundance.
"When the Japanese potters mend broken objects they aggrandize the damage by filling the cracks with gold. They believe that when somethings suffered damage and has a history it becomes more beautiful," says Lorraine.
"When I first heard of Kintsugi I was awestruck. Kintsugi is translated as “golden joinery”, but means so much more than those two descriptive words. As an art form kintsugi points to valuing the history of something that has been broken and is made whole again in a new identity. The newly reformed whole contains both the remembrance of that which was before and also what is now - something that has been broken into pieces and now reformed, containing the additional joining amalgam that is noticeable and traceable.
"Viewing Kintsugi pottery brought to mind how western culture discards broken objects, broken people, and broken relationships. We fail to see what the broken might look like if we put the resources into mending them. Our rubbish bins and landfills are filled with objects which might have been mended, but weren’t because it wasn’t worth the money or time. Likewise people give up often on themselves and one another when hope can bring renewal," she says.
