The Hoffman Exhibition is on Show at Alexandra Community House until the 18th of October. Come to see the amazing work the entrants into the Hoffman Challenge have put into creating their entries. This year 35 entries were received and 20 quilts have been chosen to travel and be on display.

The New Zealand Hoffman Challenge, which is held annually, is one of New Zealand’s main quilt competitions. The competition, for New Zealand is now organised by Needle ‘n Thread, in Geraldine. A number of other countries hold similar challenges. Even though this is the New Zealand Hoffman Challenge, it is open to all quilters no matter where they live.

The main rules, that the quilters have to adhere to are;

That the participant must purchase a metre of Challenge Fabric from Needle ‘n Thread.That the quilt is no larger than one metre squareThat the quilt is not allowed to be square or rectangularThe artist must use a recognisable amount of the Challenge Fabric

Hoffman’s are a manufacturer of fine 100% cotton fabric in the United States. Their fabric is renowned for its quality and beauty. And the Challenge Fabric is always chosen from their latest ranges.

The rules and fabric vary in the different countries that hold the competition. To the best of my knowledge, New Zealand is the only country that has the rule of not being square or rectangular.
