Chamber Music New Zealand Encompass Series Tour 2014

"the epitome of smooth...admirably fleet-fingered...extended techniques come across as naturally as birdsong"

The New Zealand Herald (Ben Hoadley, bassoon)

Based at the University of Auckland, the Donizetti Trio have been performing together since 2009. They present regular concerts in Auckland and has been recorded for Radio New Zealand Concert. The Trio also performs at the annual ‘New Zealand Music for Woodwind’ concerts in Wellington.

The Donizetti Trio have a wonderfully fresh approach to programming and will showcase the little-known but attractive repertoire for this combination. They have been involved in a number of NZ premieres, which are included alongside the Donizetti and Beethoven Trios and the best of 19th-century opera transcriptions and fantasies.

Flautist, Luca Manghi is originally from Parma in Italy, studied in Paris, and was Principal Flute of Orchestra Filarmonica di Parma. Ben Hoadley is a bassoon graduate of Tanglewood and the New England Conservatory in Boston. He has played with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as well as the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony, and NZSO. Pianist, David Kelly is the official repetiteur for NZ Opera, and coach and accompanist for the University of Auckland and NZ Opera School. Originally from Christchurch, he was chosen as one of the first PwC Dame Malvina Major Emerging Artists, and went on to study and work at the renowned Australian Opera Studio in Perth.

This programme entitled ‘A Night at the Opera’ is a showcase concert where themes from famous operas serve as the basis for displays of individual and combined virtuosity. At the time the operas were written, opera was at the centre of musical life, particularly in Italy, and these works also functioned, in the days before recordings, as a kind of 'greatest hits'.

New Zealand works are represented by - Chaos of Delight IV by Eve de Castro-Robinson inspired by New Zealand birdsong: thrush calls played by piccolo; the Paradise Duck in the bassoon; the Kokako played by both inunison and the Little Blue Penguin in the flutter tongued bassoon. Dame Gillian Whitehead’s new work Venetian Mornings is dedicated to composer Jack Body as a celebration of his 70th birthday. It was inspired by a visit to Venice in the 1960’s where she met Jack Body who was visiting independently. They shared a concert experience during which a huge storm broke, afterwards they discovered Venice had been cut off from the world - a tornado had come out of the sea.
