ROSL’s Director of Arts from London Geoff Parkin will be joined by leading chamber group the Dolmen Ensemble Som Howie clarinet, Edward King cello and Carson Becke piano.

Som Howie started the clarinet at the age of 11, studying under Mark Walton, going on to graduate from the Conservatorium of Music Sydney in 2012. In 2014 he was Co-Principal Clarinet in the Southbank Sinfonia, London where he performed Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in the UK and Italy. During the same year he also performed the Brahms Clarinet Quintet with the Allegri Quartet.

Som has performed as Principal Clarinet with several major orchestras including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Sydney Lyric Orchestra. Som is has performed as a guest musician with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Currently travelling between London and Stockholm, Som is a Performing Artist with the Arts Global Foundation and holds the Clarinet position in the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2015-2016 Foyles Future Firsts Program. He has recently won an Academy position with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra for 2016, where he will study with Principal Clarinettists Hermann Stefansson and Johan Fransen.

Edward King cello
Berlin-based New Zealander Edward King began to play the cello at the age of three, and is a graduate of the University of Waikato, the Leopold Mozart Center (Augsburg), and the University of the Arts in Berlin. Edward also maintains a busy schedule of concerts and festival appearances in Europe and in the UK as well as appearances with the New Zealand Symphony, Opus Chamber and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras in New Zealand.

Edward has won prizes at the Witold Lutoslawski International Cello Competition, Markneukirchen International Competition and the International Penderecki Cello Competition. Edward is both a prizewinner of the ROSL Annual Music Competition and a recipient of the Pettman/ROSL ARTS International Scholarship.

Edward plays on a cello of the Vuillaume school, on generous loan from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben. In 2017 he will take up a position as Associate Principal Cellist in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, based in the Sydney Opera House.

Carson Becke piano
Canadian pianist Carson Becke has performed worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician in venues including Wigmore Hall, St. Martin in the Fields, St. Georges Bristol, Cadogan Hall, the Holywell Music Room, the National Arts Centre of Canada, and the Four Seasons Centre in Toronto. He has also performed in the Verbier Festival, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For the past six years he has been the artistic director of Festival Pontiac Enchante, in Luskville, Quebec.

After moving to the United Kingdom in 2005 to study at the Purcell School, Carson completed his undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and his M.Phil in performance and musicology at the University of Oxford. Carson is currently reading for his doctorate in music at Magdalen College, Oxford. He teaches the piano at Magdalen College School, Oxford, and is on faculty at the Purcell School of Music, where he teaches composition and musicianship.
