  • 'E' Brass Quintet - Cromwell

This is an exciting new ensemble showcases the brass players of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. For those who have not heard a brass quintet live, this is your chance! From classical to jazz, string arrangements to TV and movie classics, there will be something in this programme for everyone.

The ensemble is lead by CSO Principal Trumpet Thomas Eves, who has a Master of Performance with Distinction from the Royal College of Music, London.  During his time in the UK, Thomas won a trial for Principal Trumpet of The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and performed as a soloist with a chamber group from The Philharmonia Orchestra London in a concert trip to Klosters, Switzerland. He has also played under Lorin Maazel as part of The Castleton Festival 2011 in Virginia, USA. Thomas was also runner up in the 2012 Gisborne International Music Competition, the only New Zealander in the finals.

Growing up in Timaru, Slade Hocking began his musical career at the tender age of 8 playing the cornet in the Waimataitai School Brass Band. Whilst a student at the New Zealand School of Music, Slade performed extensively with Orchestra Wellington as well as Southern Sinfonia, Auckland Philharmonia, and as a member of the trumpet section of the Central Band of the Royal New Zealand Airforce and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Youth Orchestra for five years. After going through his postgraduate studies in Tasmania, Slade spent two years at the Hoschule für Musik – Luzern, completing his Masters degree in Orchestral Trumpet and Piccolo. Alongside his studies, he performed extensively with various European orchestras. He is currently teaching at the Christchurch School of Music and at his private trumpet studio.

French horn player Bernard Shapiro has been a member of the CSO since 1988, where he now holds the Associate Principal French Horn position. He has had a colourful career, having performed with every professional company in New Zealand including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Really Useful Company and Wellington’s Vector Symphony Orchestra, as well as Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Australian Army Band.

Raised in the Ukraine, Karl Margevka was appointed as a Principal Trombone with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine in 1983 and played there up until his departure to New Zealand in 1995. That same year Karl joined Christchurch Symphony Orchestra as a Principal Trombone. He is also an artist for 'Thein Brass' in Bremen.

Nigel Seaton (tuba) began his brass playing at age 11 as a member of the Waimataitai School band in Timaru and has been a member of many of New Zealand’s top bands including Woolston, Dalewool, St Kilda, Addington and Timaru.  Over the past three years Nigel has been the Principal Tuba of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
