  • Dunedin Community Orchestra with Central Otago Reginal Orchestra

Dunedin Community Orchestra combined concert with CORO and CORTO @ Dunstan High School Hall - 3.00pm

The Dunedin Community Orchestra has most of the instruments of a full symphony orchestra. The players are adults and students associated with the Dunedin Saturday Morning Music School. Sometimes their section tutors come along too. Dean Hollebon has been coming every year and he shares the conducting with Aart. This arrangement gives players opportunity to work under differing conducting styles which helps to broaden their musical experience. Both Dean and Aart are often seen filling in with the percussion section or other instrumentation as required.

Dean has been associated with the DSMMS since commencing as a 5 year old playing violin. He conducts the Collegiate Orchestra, a community orchestra, based at the University of Otago. The players are made up of students, staff and alumni from the University of Otago, College of Education, Otago Polytechnic and local schools, and members of the greater Dunedin community. Dean plays with the Southern Symphonia. He is known for his enjoyment of heritage cars and usually arrives in style in a convertible. Whether he puts the hood up for effect on the Half Mile into Alex, in August, hasn’t been verified

Some background to Joining The Central Otago Regional Orchestra: Since its establishment membership has been open to all - no auditions or restrictions to numbers of players in any given section. The Training Orchestra was called “training” rather than “junior” to encourage adults at that level and there have been times when numbers of adults have attended which is very encouraging for both the adults and children. Some of the adults have moved into the main orchestra. Many of the students who have started in the Training orchestra have fed in to the senior group. From there they have continued in orchestras in Dunedin while studying.

On the program this Sunday are:

  • Minnie the Moocher
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Back to the Future
  • Orpheus in the Underworld
  • Pastoral Symphony
  • Grand March from Aida

The Central Otago Regional Training Orchestra will be involved along with String, Flute and Clarinet items.
