Location, location, location

Our place, Central Otago has become prime real estate. More than 100 years ago the colonial painters came to New Zealand to paint the land,to advertise its charms to potential purchasers and their chosen imagery was the  obvious beauty of the mountains, lakes, bush and bays.

The small works in this exhibition are  selected vignettes of  wild places around where I live in the hills beyond Bannockburn. Not the usual tourist meccas , but places discovered when roaming the hills and valleys, ordinary places. To highlight the precious character of these areas I have placed them in oval  frames, reminiscent of time past. Each work is a cameo of places that are increasingly under threat by progress , and is a one off oil painting. They are not slick, but earthy works, reflective of the land they seek to represent, and each one has taken time to make. The frames too are custom made to compliment the work and the idea.

A way to describe my practise as an artist, is to say that in the production of my work I prefer to take the long way rather than the shortcut. Each layer of paint tells a story of discovery and, like the land I walk through, reveals stratas of memory and  history.
