"Off-Piste" - Recycled Snowboard Exhibition
Location: Queenstown Arts Centre
Region: Queenstown
Dates: Fri, 24 June 2016 - Wed, 13 July 2016
Over and above the pure desire to get creative with a bunch of old, broken snowboards, this event actually has a higher purpose to it – the support of a Paraolympics snowboarder whose funding from High Performance Sport may be in jeopardy.
Wanaka-based Paraolympics athlete Carl Murphy is a well-known local shredder, with big aspirations. He’s had a successful career in para-snowboard racing but has had some unfortuante injuries the past couple of years. Carl is now working his way back to full fitness and will be back on snow mid-winter 2016. His goal is to get back overseas to train and compete for the Northern Hemi winter, and this event will help his do so.
Entry to the event is a simple gold coin donation, with all proceeds going straight to Carl. It’s also possible to purchase some of the snowboard art on display; the creations that are for sale anyway, which not all of them are.
The proceeds of art sales are split between the individual artist and the Queenstown Art Centre, with the larger proportion going to the artist themselves. Buyers are also given the opportunity to donate a chosen amount direct to Carl. Prices start at around $550.
The event is on until the 13th July, so be sure to check it out!
