Artist Statement regarding processes and concepts

The landscape interests me on many levels as it feeds us both physically and emotionally. Landscapes present a changing vista, daily and seasonally, depending on the light, weather, plants and animals occupying it, and how each individual looks at the landscape.  My work explores the way we see, feel and remember the landscape.

Allowing an array of moods and perspectives to be represented in a collection of small paintings creates an encompassing image of a landscape’s character.

I paint directly, without the use of photographs or preliminary drawings, from remembered scenes and the emotions these evoked.

I start with a single mark which develops and evolves intuitively until a resolved image appears. Having several panels active at a time helps in this process of resolution of ideas and keep the paintings fresh.

Though displayed as a group, these works are available for purchase either separately or in multiples. This creates the opportunity for individuals to create their own combination of aspects of the landscape.
