Reflections: Remembering Doug Ayson
Location: Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery
Region: Alexandra
Dates: Fri, 21 August 2015 - Sun, 4 October 2015
This exhibition devoted to well-known local Alexandra artist Doug Ayson who sadly passed away last year. Doug was a passionate artist and thoroughly dedicated to his community. He illustrated a number of local books and was also a self-taught musician.
Ayson, one of six siblings, grew up in the Maniototo. He spent time working at the Post Office, before buying a Four Square grocery business in Ranfurly which he sold in 1975 to follow his passion for art.
He was most well-known for his mural work that can be seen on many of Alexandra's buildings, including New World, Henry's and Terrace Distributors. Some of his work depicting Central Otago scenes even grace the sides of the Terrace Distributors' fleet of trucks which travel around the country.
‘Reflections’ will tell the story of Doug’s life and also display a significant amount of his work – perhaps for the last time.
