Liz Rowe's new exhibition 'Dream City'.
Shipping containers have become the lynchpin of international trade, with around 17 million of them carrying pretty much everything that is made in one place and consumed in another. Without our realising it, the twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) has become the base unit of our global world. And with the relentless growth in world trade, the size of the container ships and the ports that service them have become enormous beyond description – mini cities filled with the stuff of dreams and life.
Many artists grapple with the paradox of making – more stuff seems hardly what the world needs, but still there is a compulsion to make art. Is there a difference between the hand-made and individually crafted art work and the mass produced commodities that fill shipping containers by the dozen? Dream City is a nod to the impossibility of reconciling these questions.
Dream City opens at Hullabaloo Art Space on 16 November and runs until 6 December. It includes drawings and ceramic works.
Hullabaloo art space is a contemporary art gallery based in the beautiful historic precinct of Old Cromwell Town, on the shores of Lake Dunstan.
The gallery presents solo and group exhibitions from New Zealand artists. We have a diverse range of work from the disiplines of sculpture, painting, photography, ceramics, printmaking and multimedia.
Hullabaloo art space is an artist run initiative with an artist on duty in the gallery to welcome you and advise on artworks.
We have changing solo exhibitions in a designated ‘room’ within the gallery. The gallery is a spacious white walled space which is rehung every month to keep things fresh for the artists and to inspire and stimulate the visitor.
So come and visit and see what we have to offer now!
