‘Behind the Name’
Behind the Name is a celebration of four local identities who achieved much in their lifetime to establish and foster the history of Central Otago. Visiting the exhibition is a wonderful way to spend an hour or two on a cold winter's day. Just inside the entrance is a framed black and white portrait of each: Elizabeth Heafey, Russell Henderson, William Bodkin and John Mc Craw.
The exhibits have easy to read information supported by still life tableaux of personal items. These, along with personal memories and stories by those who knew the subjects, paint intimate and heart-warming pictures of each. Elizabeth, a woman committed to a life of sevice both as a nurse and as benefactor to the collection of artefacts at Central Stories. Russell, a philanthropist with a vision to foster the social life of the community- testament to which the retreat for New Zealand artists at his former Bridge Hill home. William, solicitor, politicain and dedicated advocate for the preservation of Central Otago's history; the "Father of Irrigation." And John, geologist but also a man of letters as represented by his wooden desk and typewriter. His passion was local history and he made a long-standing contribution to the area by writing fifteen books on a range of local concerns.
At the end of all this you get to make your own contribution in memory books strategically placed in front of a comfy leather couch. We all have stories to tell and what better place to do it than at the end of such an enjoyable exhibition. Be sure to take time to pen a contribution as this is how history is compiled and handed down for future generations.
