FRAGMENTS – Artists I Know
This exhibition is a series of fifteen iconic photographic triptych images and associated text panels to highlight some of the artistic talent and creative people I have met and know in the Central Otago area.
Eric Schusser is an emerging photographic artist from Alexandra. He is a member of the Hullabaloo artists’ collective and specialises in fine art prints and social documentary work. He has exhibited in group and solo shows in Rotorua, Alexandra, Cromwell, Wellington and Wanaka.
Photographers statement:
Environmental portraiture is a way to convey information about a person, to fill in the picture as to what is important in their lives. This exhibition takes inspiration from the work of a number of environmental portrait photographers using a combination of colour images of an artists work sandwiched with a black and white portrait to create a triptych image.
The 150 year celebration of the discovery of gold in Central Otago has inspired me to produce this series of images showing the wealth of talent amongst artists in the area. Gold is often a hidden wealth until exposed and refined. The artistic talent in this area is also a somewhat hidden wealth. These three images of each artist combine to convey something of them and their art - in essence they are fragment of the gold that lies in all of us if we have the opportunity and make the choice to unveil it. Each artist completed questions relating to their art form, their life and inspiration - I have developed these into text panels telling us about them and their art. These supplement and complement the triptych images.
These are the words and images of the artistic talent in this area - while unique to Central Otago, they will also be familiar in some shape or form to most of us and will resonate emotions we are comfortable with and recognise within ourselves.
