Artbay Gallery opens its brand new exhibition space in the new Marine Parade building, Queenstown with an exclusive show featuring the work of Cheree Te Orangaroa Downes. 

Entitled ‘Te Aho - The Life Thread’, the exhibition showcases Cheree’s tactile artwork which fuses tradition with contemporary art elements. She uses traditional techniques to weave harakeke (flax) and muka (flax fibre) and combines these with recycled materials such as metal, animal skins and rustic wood.

At once both modern and traditional, the work of Cheree Te Orangaroa Downes has strong connections with our environment, particularly that of Southland, New Zealand. 

Her artwork has formerly been featured at WOW Wellington, Southland Museum and Art Gallery and Venture Southland’s ‘Matariki in the Park’. Cheree has also completed commissions for Southland Hospital, Dunedin College of Education and many Southland marae and businesses.

Artbay Gallery is a multi-award-winning art gallery in the centre of Queenstown, New Zealand. First opened in 1994, it has organically grown into what it is today, showcasing a varied selection of unique, vibrant and diverse contemporary art.
