BANNOCKBURN ARTIST WINS FOURTH AWARD IN A YEAR [Mon, 13 August 2012]

  • BANNOCKBURN ARTIST WINS FOURTH AWARD IN A YEAR - - A Page of Incantations by Megan Huffadine.

Bannockburn based artist Megan Huffadine has picked up her fourth sculpture award in the last twelve months.

Last week Huffadine won the ILT Art Awards Sculpture Prize in Invercargill capping off a year in which she won this award twice as well as the Waitakere Art Awards Lincoln Green Sculpture Award in Auckland as well as the Central Otago Art Awards for a Central Otago artist.

Her winning work at the ILT Awards, “a third collection from the Megan wins againmuseum of forgotten histories” is a wall work with 22 individual sculptures.

Huffadine draws on her experience in archaeology and working in museums to create her sculptures. This work concerns the objects that survive and outlast the lives of their makers and owners. Beginning with real objects Huffadine draws and reworks the forms creating new sculptures. As a result the works are ambiguous, yet have a sense of the familiar. “This reflects the telling and retelling of histories”, said Huffadine.

The arrangement of sculptures on the wall is reminiscent of museum displays giving the sense of a language or story waiting to be read. The judges commented that the work  …. “has an intrigue that draws the viewer in for a closer look at the individual elements within the collection. It is a work that cleverly controls the viewers’ time and attention to read, reflect and unravel the mysteries within”.
