Harakeke Weaving - Ranfurly

Location: Maniototo Arts Centre, 3 Reade St, Ranfurly
Region: Ranfurly
Dates: Tue, 8 February 2022 - Tue, 12 April 2022 @ Tuesdays, 9am - 3pm.

  • Harakeke Weaving - Ranfurly

This course will teach you how to use traditional weaving skills to produce several items woven from Harakeke. You will learn Tikanga and basic Te Reo associated with this craft.

By the end of the course you will:

· Understand the Tikanga associated with Harakeke weaving

· Produce some beautiful woven items to take home with you, and be able to use and display in your home

· Learn the protocols around harvesting flax and preparing it for weaving

· Be able to complete basic designs up to more technical and embellished basket designs

About the Tutor - Marcanui 
Marcanui has a passion for Māori culture, the history and beauty of New Zealand, and for sharing this with people of all ages, backgrounds and ethnicities.
He enjoys teaching as much as he enjoys technical challenges and has a passion for weaving, both preserving the traditional methods handed down, as well as contemporary applications.
