Microcosm

An exhibition of paintings by Gail de Jong

Encased within pristine white frames six quintessential landscapes pay homage to Central Otago. Here are silvery blue lakes and rivers, sun bleached plains, spectacular skies and dense shadows over brooding hills. This is my world, the land I love to wander through, the place I live, the place I paint.

In these recent works I have experimented with process, placing traditional oil paints over reflective industrial surfaces. The binary polarity of materials and frames create both dynamic passages and poetic interludes, as well as referencing geological diversity. Just as our land is special to us and valued so the presentation of these little paintings emphasises the wild yet fragile beauty of our world.

In the larger work an imitation gilded frame is juxtaposed alongside a contemporary landscape of the Goldfields, bringing together different eras and styles, and making comment too on the perceived value of a work of Art.
