VIVA VIVALDI! - A Celebration of Music!
In early November, The Central Otago Regional Choir and its founding conductor of fourteen years John Buchanan, present “Viva Vivaldi,” a joyous celebration of exquisite music, culminating in the performance of one of Vivaldi’s most popular works: the exuberant and inspirational Gloria in D. Although the choir and soloists Caroline Burchell and Lucy Clough will not be mysteriously shielded from the audience by patterned screens, as in the original legendary performances, when Vivaldi’s students, the young ladies of Venice’s orphanage Pio Ospedale della Pietà sang the work, authenticity is nevertheless maintained in the accompaniment: a string quartet from Dunedin’s Symphony Orchestra, with additional colour provided by oboe, bassoon and trumpet and the continuo part performed by Kemp English (harpsichord). Authenticity also features in the first half of the concert, when Kemp English and the string quartet perform Haydn’s delightfully elegant and delicate Concerto in D for Harpsichord. This half also includes a selection of favourite works, accompanied by Sharon McLennan (piano). Chosen by the choir, these works will be performed as a special tribute to John Buchanan, who will be leaving Central Otago. Join us for this memorable celebration of music at its best!
