‘Bring It On …….Beethoven’
This play was written as part of the celebration of Beethoven’s 250th Anniversary this year. It is about an amateur band competing in a nationwide musical competition where a contemporary composition is created and performed in Wellington, based on an original Beethoven piece.
Rad Butler, the drummer played by Jesse Orchard, portrays many of Beethoven’s unusual characteristics. His father Harry, played by Connor Prew, does not understand music’s magnetic pull and so is at odds with his difficult son and is endlessly placated by his wife Alice, played by Emily Darling. Beethoven’s ghost lurks over the events and an ex-girlfriend plots to bring Rad’s band down to disaster, while Rad’s friends and the rest of his family work together to try and rescue the situation.
The cast comprises senior students from Roxburgh Area School and some members of the local Teviot Valley community. A well-known musical identity, Rosemary Kelly, plays excerpts from some of Beethoven’s piano compositions, the score of the band’s entry of ‘Bagatelle Blues’ was composed by Musical Director, Alastair Monteath, and the script was written by Director Barbara Fraser.
