Forces within the Dunstan

The Forces Within the Dunstan is an abstract stainless steel sculpture located in Pioneer Park, Alexandra, New Zealand.

Designed by Russell Beck and fabricated by Andrew Beck in 2009, this striking artwork symbolises the geological forces that have shaped the Alexandra region.

The sculpture represents a cross-sectional core of the inferred geology of the area. Three elements vividly illustrate the immense forces of faults within the Earth’s crust. These forces have displaced the land into blocks, forming the mountain ranges on either side of the Manuherikia Valley. The grooves on the sculpture depict the Manuherikia and Clutha Rivers, further emphasising the geological context.

A fusion of art and geology!
