What's happening in Central Otago
The Behn Quartet
Location: Cromwell Presbyterian Church, 10 Elspeth St, Cromwell.
Region: Cromwell
Dates: Sat, 28 April 2018 @ 3pm.
Performing at London’s prestigious Wigmore Hall, ranks for classical musicians, alongside playing at Lords for cricketers, Wimbledon for tennis players or Augusta for golfers.
It’s a special place and late last month the Behn Quartet made their debut recital appearance at Wigmore about which they were mighty excited.
What they are also mighty excited about is next month they will travel around the globe for an 8 city, 2 town tour of New Zealand including Cromwell.
The Behn Quartet was formed in 2015 and is made up of violinists Kate Oswin and Alicia Berendse from New Zealand and The Netherlands respectively, violist Lydia Abell from Wales and Ghislaine McMullan from England. The four met, when having all achieved local success, were furthering their musical careers in London.
They are the current holders of the CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music in London and last year they won the Charles Hennen Prize at the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition in The Netherlands.
The programme the Quartet perform will show why the folk song influence in Dvorak’s ‘American’ quartet is one of the most loved in the repertoire, while the classical restraint of Ravel’s String Quartet in F major will reveal devastating depths of emotion. Not to be overshadowed New Zealand composer Jack Body’s Three Transcriptions will round out the programme recreating the sounds of Madagascan zither and Bulgarian village bands.
This concert forms part of Chamber Music NZ's Encompass series.
Tickets: Adults $30; SuperGold $25; Student/Child $5 are now on sale from the Cromwell and all Central Otago District iSites. Door sales will be available.
