Artist Statement
I’ve always been emotionally sensitive and very expressive with my hands. I'm the girl who would always cry at Lassie and whose hands move like windmills when I speak, so naturally body language features in all of my sculptures.
Much of my previous work has explored grief and inner torments. In the winter of 2012, I decided it was time for a positive, refreshing change. I began to play with Nelson clay, a medium quite unfamiliar to me. And, before long, I met Aarpi.
Aarpi appeals to the optimist in me. This inaugural collection, shown here for the first time, is quite subtle in terms of expressions and interactions. It is my hope that you will connect with these playful, wondrous creatures in a way that is meaningful to you.
For me, their light and gentle nature is a joy to be around. They remind me of family bonds and simple, uncomplicated ideals. They also remind me of a spirit of community and how important it is to protect natural habitats. Too many native species in New Zealand are in peril. We must do all we can to reverse that trend.
When I sculpt I’m very intense and focused on the smallest details. When I take a moment to stand back from the work, it can feel like I’m seeing it for the first time. This is also the case when the pieces are coloured, as every hair is individually painted on.
I've been sculpting with polymer clay for nearly 10 years. This is my first series of fine art works using ceramic clay. My only other experience in this medium has been making pendants. These feature a range of New Zealand wildlife, many of which are on the endangered species list.
Now with Aarpi, I’m looking forward to seeing where my new friends lead me, while at the same time raising awareness for endangered species.
